Magnetic Resonance Fellowship

MRI Fellows

Fellowship application forms should be downloaded from the link above. Interviews will be held in September thru November and positions will be offered to successful candidates in early December.
Our fellows work closely with MR faculty at UCSD sharing responsibility for the daily operation of UCSD Clinical MR scanners. The MR Institute is a 6000 square foot facility adjacent to the UCSD Medical Center. Laboratory space is available in the building as well as appropriate patient care areas, offices and a conference room. Our MRI program incorporates UCSD Medical Centers at Hillcrest and La Jolla (Thornton Hospital) and the Moores Cancer Center; the VA Medical Center; and UCSD Imaging at La Jolla. All centers are equipped with state of the art MR imaging equipment including two 3T and six 1.5T MRI systems. In addition there is an active teleradiology service in operation.
The MRI fellows gain superb experience in all aspects of MR imaging including brain, spine, body, breast, fetal, musculoskeletal, peripheral vascular and cardiac. MR experience, in addition to routine MR techniques, includes MR angiography, EPI diffusion (conventional and tensor) and perfusion, spectroscopy and functional MRI. In addition to clinical duties, the fellows have the responsibility of teaching radiology residents, medical students and visiting fellows. Our educational program is enhanced by numerous subspecialty conferences. Ample time is provided for clinical and laboratory research projects.
Research opportunities in MRI abound at UCSD. In addition to our clinical magnets UCSD currently has 5 research magnets (three 3T, one 1.5T and one 7T rodent magnet). Current research areas include ultrashort TE techniques (Graeme Bydder, MD, creator of FLAIR and STIR), functional MRI (Richard Buxton, PhD), liver MRI (Claude Sirlin MD), cartilage and tendon imaging (Christine Chung MD), MEG (Roland Lee MD), CSF Flow and NPH (William Bradley PhD) brain morphometry (Anders Dale PhD).
